2025: The End of Gas Boilers – What’s Next in Energy Efficiency

The campaign against gas boilers is nothing new. As early as 2021, the International Energy Agency called on countries to end the sale of fossil fuel boilers within four years, which would also apply to natural gas boilers, among other things.

It should have been much earlier

If it were to proceed according to this call, there would be a definitive end to gas boilers already in 2025. At the time, many tapped their foreheads and claimed that something like this would not happen for decades. But then events took a very rapid turn.

There was an absolutely crushing increase in the price of gas and concerns about whether there would be enough of it at all. At the same time, the abundance and low price of this fuel were considered the greatest advantage and the reason why it was still tolerated, unlike others. However, these advantages fell away, and thus even the biggest obstacles to sticking to gas boilers receded into the background.

At the same time, widely available alternatives have appeared, be it solar panels or heat pumps, ideally their combination. After all, people have already started installing them in large numbers, so this is apparently an unstoppable change.

So now it’s just a matter of determining the date when gas boilers will be definitively banned. For example, Germany almost rushed last year by first pushing through a ban on them from 2024, only to quickly back off as it became clear that it would cause huge problems.

It’s about to fall

However, as the Euractiv server now informs, supporters of the ban on gas boilers are in the majority today and are getting very noticeably stronger. Within the European Union, a project is running with the aim of ensuring higher energy efficiency of all buildings, including private ones. Already in 2030, even family homes will have to meet a certain energy efficiency, which will of course be helped by the installation of a heat pump, although it is necessary to realize that it will cost hundreds of thousands of crowns and is not suitable everywhere.

A total ban on gas boilers, meaning that they will no longer be sold and installed, should come in 2040, which is still a relatively distant date, although it is fast approaching. Apparently, the experts have found that it won’t quite work without gas for quite some time.
