GOTHENBURG. The 2024 Under-20 World Cup continues without the participation of Slovak hockey players.
Ivan Feneš’s team failed in the quarter-final match when they lost to Finland 3:4 after extra time.
Slovaks came to the tournament with medal ambitions. In the A-group, they finished in second place with a record of three wins and one loss. Finally, they took the final sixth place.
The semi-final matches will begin on Thursday, January 4.
In the first duel of the best four teams of the championship, the home Swedes will meet the Czechs. “Tre konor” really fought their way through, in the quarter-finals they defeated the Swiss only after extra time.
In a replay of last year’s final, the Czechs eliminated the defending champion from Canada after a 3:2 triumph. They scored the winning goal 11 seconds before the end of the final period.
The second finalist will be decided by the USA vs. Finland match. The Americans are going through the tournament without a single loss, they scored seven goals against Latvia in the quarterfinals.
The Finns fought their way into the top four with a victory over the Slovak national team. The balanced duel reached extra time, in which the northerners decided in the first minute and triumphed with the result 4:3.
The pairings for the semi-finals were decided by the placement of the teams after the basic groups. The highest-seeded advancing team from the quarter-finals will meet the fourth-seeded team. The WC final is scheduled for Friday, January 5 at 7:30 p.m.
