2024 Season of Teatro Colón: An Update on Austerity Measures and Argentine Cultural Excellence

Although there are fewer foreign hires and some replacements, the Minister of Culture of the City of Buenos Aires Gabriela Ricardes assured that “excellence is maintained.” The strong points: the piano of Martha Argerich and the dance of Marianela Núñez.

The 2024 season of the Teatro Colón was announced this Thursday under the paradigm of “austerity”: the calendar ensures two Argentine presences of first international level such as Martha Argerich and Marianela Núñez, fewer foreign hires, revivals -many of recent productions- to sustain the number of lyrical titles and a limited ballet scheme.

«No one escapes the complexity of the moment. Our responsibility presents, in any case, a challenge. Being part of society, assuming oneself in that fabric without ceasing to be what Columbus is: a sample of Argentine culture, its present and its heritage. The present imposes greater austerity,” wrote Jorge Telerman, general and artistic director of the theater when presenting the season.

«Since we started thinking about the season and this moment, things have happened but it is precisely about working with the tools of the moment. “Excellence is maintained,” said the official, at the season presentation ceremony, accompanied by the City’s Minister of Culture, Gabriela Ricardes.

The Argerich Festival

The presence of the pianist Martha Argerich, with the Festival that bears his name, between August 3 and 18 establishes continuity with the past.

She will be accompanied by pianists from her musical universe (in 2023, Sergio Tiempo and Nelson Goerner, among others). The Festival’s concert and artist scheme was not announced with the season.

Opera

The lyrical season will offer seven titles: it will begin on Friday, April 12 with «Ariadna on Naxos», the culmination of Richard Strauss’s collaborations with the playwright Hugo von Hofmannsthal, under the direction of the Argentine Marcelo Lombardero. The piece was on the theater’s calendar in the 2019 season.

There will be reruns like «Turandot», the opera by Giáccomo Puccini, in the historic staging by Roberto Oswald; and “The consul”, by Gian Carlo Menotti and in the scenic vision of Rubén Szuchmacher. New productions will also be presented such as «Carmen», by Georges Bizet, a creation between the Teatro La Fenice in Venice, the Teatro Massimo in Palermo, the Gran Teatre del Liceu in Barcelona, and the Teatro Regio in Turin; the return of “Aurora”, by Héctor Panizza, after 25 years; “Orpheus in hell”, by Jacques Offenbach; and the closing will be between November and December with “A masked ball,” by Giuseppe Verdi, with stage direction by Rita Cosentino and set design by Enrique Bordolini.

“The axis of the seven titles is a reflection on power in its broad sense,” said Telerman.

Danza

He Ballet Teatro Colón stable will present five titles. The focus will be on the presence of the dancer Marianela Nuñez, leading figure of the Royal Ballet of London, in “Sleeping Beauty”, with music by the Russian composer Pyotr Ilich Tchaikovsky. There will be ten performances starting June 11.

The ballet corps, under the direction of Mario Galizzi, will also offer «Carmina Burana», in Mauricio Wainrot’s version; a mixed program composed of «Suite en Blanc», «Adagietto» and «Bolero X»; the classic «Giselle» y “La Bayadere”, with choreography by Mario Galizzi and the participation of the first dancer of the Marinsky Theater, the Korean Kimin Kin.

Concert

The Buenos Aires Philharmonic Orchestra It will present a program of twenty concerts and will bring together several soloists and conductors of international importance. The Stable Orchestra of the Teatro Colón will have its cycle of five performances in addition to being part of the opera and ballet seasons.

The 2024 edition of the cycle Contemporary will begin on April 25 with the replacement of «Einstein on the beach», version by Martín Bauer and Rodrigo de Caso of the opera by Robert Wilson and Philip Glass, premiered at the Teatro Colón in 2023.

He Teatro Colón Experimentation Center directed by Diana Theocharidis will celebrate the 15 years of the Contemporary Music Ensemble of the Department of Musical and Sound Arts of the National University of the Arts (EMC Damus) with a program of short works by more than twenty Argentine composers, and the 20 years of uninterrupted work of the Compañía Oblicua ensemble under the direction of its creator, the composer Marcelo Delgado with two programs made up of works from the premieres made by the ensemble of current composers of our country, among which are Juan Carlos Tolosa, Agustina Crespo and Jorge Chikiar.

For its part, the Experimentation Center of the Teatro Colón announces «Materials under construction, universes to be exploited», by the Dance Company of the National University of the Arts (UNA) and «Kenta», a contemporary music program by participants of the Children and Youth Orchestras Program of the City of Buenos Aires.

The series of «Extraordinary concerts», affected by austerity criteria, will include in 2024 the Chinese pianist Yuja Wang, the soprano Hera Hyesang Park, the Camerata Antiqua of Curitiba under the musical direction of Ricardo Kangi, the National Symphony Orchestra of Colombia under the musical direction of Yeruham Scharovsky, a concert by the Teatro Colón Stable Orchestra conducted by Sylvain Gasançon and another by the Petrobras Symphony under the baton of Isaac Karabtchevsky.

“The programming of an official theater, like the Colón, is, furthermore, not only a way of responding to that reality but an expression of its vocation to intervene in it,” Telerman wrote in his letter presenting the season, whose profile will not be indifferent to theater habitues.
