“2024 Presidential Election: Biden Announces Re-Election Bid Against Possible Trump Run”

In 2024, the presidential election of the United States will have Joe Biden on the ticket against a Republican candidate. Surveys suggest that person could be Donald Trump. President Biden announced his re-election this week, on April 25, on the fourth anniversary of the start of his previous campaign for the 2020 elections. Although, in reality, this is the fourth time that he has sought the presidency: his first attempt is in history, before the fall of the Soviet Union, when the world was another. If he manages to complete a second period in the White HouseBiden will be 86 years old when he leaves the oval workshop.

Those two factors, his age and the natural wear and tear from his time in politics, weigh against him and help us understand why 70% of Americans did not want him to run again, including 50% of the democrats. But in 2020 Biden’s candidacy was the answer to a question that remains open for the Democratic party today: who among their ranks has the best chance of beating Trump in a general election?

There are other talents in the Democratic party: Gavin Newsom, the governor of California, and Gretchen Whitmer, of Michigan, to name a few. But no serious politician from the same party would seek to destabilize the campaign of a president who wants to be re-elected. So for now, there are no major rivals for Biden (only Marianne Williamson and Robert F. Kennedy Jr., both with very low chances).

And it’s true: Most Americans didn’t want to see Biden in the race again. But his numbers are better than Trump’s. A Wall Street Journal poll suggests that when voters have to choose between one or the other, Biden has a 54% lead over Trump’s 15%.

Nothing is written yet. Trump, 76, has to win the Republican primary first (for now his lead is growing over Florida Gov. Ron DeSantis, his closest rival). It seems that the indictment against him in Manhattan Criminal Court has given him momentum. And he has more pending cases: for the secret Mar a Lago papers, for the alleged interference in the Georgia elections and for the January 6 attack on the Capitol, among others. It is possible that right in the final stretch of the campaigns in 2024, former President Trump is in the middle of a trial.

Biden, on the other hand, has important challenges in front of him. In theory, a president seeking re-election relies on his record in office, but in practice elections are not just a referendum on the achievements of the incumbent. Campaigns matter. And the state of the economy in 2024 will also be crucial.

The road is still long for both of us. The two would be the longest-lived men to reach the White House. If it comes to fruition, the sequel to Biden against Trump in 2024 will be the story of a country whose political future will rest on octogenarian shoulders.
