Jakarta, CNBC Indonesia – The 2024 presidential candidate debate which took place today, Sunday (7/1/2024) at Istora Senayan, Jakarta, was heated.
The three presidential candidates competed with each other regarding issues of defense, security, international relations and geopolitics.
Several hot topics discussed were related to the South China Sea (SCS) dispute, the Ministry of Defense budget and spending on used defense equipment, and several indices related to defense and military in Indonesia which were declining.
The question about the declining index was asked by presidential candidate number 3 Ganjar Pranowo to presidential candidate number 2 Prabowo Subianto. Because, Prabowo currently serves as Minister of Defense (Menhan).
However, Prabowo denied these data, saying they were inaccurate.
Ganjar considered that none of the answers given by Prabowo in the debate session answered his question. In fact, he thought that Prabowo could only dispute the data presented in the question and answer session without being able to provide comparable data.
“I’m sorry this time you didn’t answer my question at all. I want the data that you said was wrong, please refute it there, you can’t refute it,” said Ganjar.
Prabowo also argued that he could not present his version of the data because he was not given time in the debate. When Ganjar asked that he need to be given the data right now, Prabowo looked emotional.
“You are not fair,” said Prabowo
Apart from that, Anies also touched on the number of insiders involved in the procurement of defense equipment at the Ministry of Defense. Anies also said that Prabowo had committed ethical violations.
Responding to this, Prabowo again uttered a scathing sentence, saying that Anies was not fit to talk about ethics. He also said that Anies was misleading.
“You are setting a bad example regarding ethics,” said Prabowo.
Not only was there commotion at the debate location, but this argument was also discussed by netizens on social media. Prabowo’s response, which was considered emotional in facing the debate, was highlighted by netizens.
According to CNBC Indonesia monitoring, several hashtags are among the most popular. These include ‘Emotion’, ‘Gemoysian’, ‘Omon’, and ‘El Gemoy’.
