The pollen season will soon be in full swing. Although the forecast is that there will still be a “low amount” of cedar pollen in all parts of the country into next week, a small amount of cedar pollen has already been observed in central Tokyo. If you are sensitive, start taking precautions.
Full-fledged pollen season is just around the corner
As we enter February, pollen becomes a concern. For the next week, pollen is expected to be low in many places, but a small amount of pollen has already been observed in central Tokyo. If you are sensitive, it might be a good idea to start taking precautions.
According to data from the Tokyo Metropolitan Health and Medical Bureau’s “Tokyo Allergy Information Navi.”, the cumulative amount of cedar pollen since January 4th is 1.2 pollen/cm2 in Chiyoda, 1.8 pollen/cm2 in Katsushika, and 3.6 pollen/cm2 in Hachioji. , 3.0 pieces/cm2 in Tama (values as of January 29th for Chiyoda and Katsushika wards, and as of February 1st for Hachioji and Tama).
Although the “dispersion start date*” has not yet been reached in areas such as central Tokyo, those with hay fever should take precautions as soon as possible (as of February 1st).
*The scattering start date is the first day on which 1 or more cedar pollen per square centimeter was observed for 2 consecutive days.
Cedar pollen season earlier than usual
The cedar pollen season started about the same as usual or earlier than usual. Cedar pollen is expected to start scattering in parts of Kyushu, Shikoku, Chugoku, Tokai, and Kanto-Koshin in early February. The scattering will start in mid-February in the Kinki region, mid-to-late February in Hokuriku and southern Tohoku, and early to mid-March in northern Tohoku.
This year is expected to be about the same as usual.
The amount of pollen scattered this season is expected to be “around normal” or “slightly higher” in many places from Kyushu to the southern Tohoku region. The forecast is for “a lot” in northern Tohoku, and “a very large amount” in Hokkaido. Please stay alert and take all possible precautions this season.
Pollen countermeasures when going out
To alleviate the symptoms of hay fever, it is important to avoid pollen as much as possible. As shown below, you can expect to be effective in preventing pollen by dressing wisely.
① Depending on the material, some clothes tend to attract pollen more easily, while others don’t. In general, clothing made of wool attracts pollen more easily than cotton or synthetic fibers, making it easier to carry pollen indoors. Wool attracts pollen about 10 times more easily than cotton. When going out, avoid wearing woolen clothing on the outside and choose jackets made of smooth material.
② Clothes are not the only things that pollen tends to adhere to. Wearing a wide-brimmed hat can reduce the amount of pollen that sticks to your exposed head and face. If you have long hair, just tying it up can be effective. Wearing gloves can also reduce pollen on your hands.
