2024 NFL Scouting Combine: Injuries, Standout Cornerbacks, and Tight End Surprises
The 2024 NFL Scouting Combine kicked off with a bang, showcasing the talents of some of the most promising prospects in the upcoming draft. From injuries to standout performances, the event had it all. Let’s dive into the highlights of the day.
Unfortunate injuries mar the day
The Combine got off to a disappointing start as two potential stars suffered injuries during their workouts. Clemson cornerback Nate Wiggins, who was in contention to be the first corner off the board, showcased his speed with a fantastic 4.29-second 40-yard dash. However, his impressive run was cut short when he suffered a hip flexor injury. Similarly, Texas Tech safety Tyler Owens, known for his athleticism, was on track for a remarkable performance before a groin injury forced him to end his day prematurely. Despite these setbacks, both players remain hopeful for a successful rookie season.
Cornerbacks steal the spotlight
The cornerback group at the Combine proved to be a force to be reckoned with. Quinyon Mitchell from Toledo made a name for himself with his standout performance at the Senior Bowl. He displayed excellent explosiveness and speed, recording a 38-inch vertical and an impressive 4.33-second 40-yard dash. Rutgers cornerback Max Melton also caught the attention of scouts with his exceptional workout. Despite being slightly undersized for an NFL corner, Melton showcased his speed, explosiveness, and agility, solidifying his position as a top prospect. Another player who turned heads was Notre Dame receiver-turned-corner Cam Hart. With his fantastic length and quick feet, Hart proved that he is a sleeper pick in this year’s cornerback class.
Safeties remain a mystery
While the cornerback group shone brightly, the safety class left scouts wanting more. Although there are talented players in the mix, no clear standout emerged. However, Cole Bishop managed to make a strong impression with his versatility and athleticism. Bishop’s impressive workout, including a 39-inch vertical and a 4.45-second 40-yard dash, showcased his potential as a coverage option. Unfortunately, Bishop’s day ended on a sour note as he suffered an injury at the end of his workout. USC safety Calen Bullock also displayed promising athleticism, demonstrating his ball-hawking skills and quick feet. Another rising star in the safety group was Texas Tech’s Dadrion Taylor-Demerson, affectionately known as “Rabbit.” Despite his smaller stature, Taylor-Demerson’s blazing speed and impressive tape caught the attention of scouts.
Tight ends make their mark
The tight end class at the Combine was headlined by Brock Bowers, who is widely regarded as the top prospect at the position. Although Bowers did not participate in the on-field workouts, his impressive college career speaks for itself. However, one player who surprised everyone was Illinois’ Tip Reiman. Reiman’s combination of size, blocking ability, and impressive athleticism, including a 4.64-second 40-yard dash and a 10-foot broad jump, elevated his draft stock significantly. Another tight end making waves is Kansas State’s Ben Sinnott. Known for his versatility, Sinnott showcased his athleticism with a 40-inch vertical and a 10-foot-6 broad jump, solidifying his case as the second-best tight end in the class.
The Combine continues to be a platform for young athletes to showcase their skills and make a name for themselves in the NFL. As the event progresses, more surprises and standout performances are sure to come. Stay tuned for more updates on the future stars of the league.
