“2024 NFL Combine: Grades for Top DB Prospects and Winners/Losers”

The 2024 NFL Combine is in full swing, and Day 2 brought us some exciting performances from the top defensive back prospects. As the players showcased their skills inside Lucas Oil Stadium in Indianapolis, some stood out with impressive displays, while others fell short of expectations. Let’s take a closer look at the winners and losers from Friday’s on-field drills.

Grading the top-rated DBs:

Toledo cornerback Quinyon Mitchell had a stellar day, earning an A- grade. Although his 10-foot broad jump was slightly below average, Mitchell’s performance in other areas was exceptional. Running the 40-yard dash in just 4.33 seconds at 6-foot and 195 pounds is truly sensational. Additionally, his 38-inch vertical jump showcased his explosiveness. Mitchell proved that he is not only a ballhawk but also one of the most athletic prospects in his class.

Alabama cornerback Terrion Arnold received a B+ grade. While his 4.51-second 40-yard dash was a bit slower than expected, Arnold’s overall workout was still impressive. Standing just under 6-foot and weighing 190 pounds, he displayed first-round caliber skills.

Clemson cornerback Nate Wiggins earned an A- grade for his unique frame and lightning-fast speed. At 6-1 and 173 pounds, Wiggins ignited the 40-yard dash with a remarkable time of 4.28 seconds. Unfortunately, he suffered a hip injury during the process, but his speed alone solidifies his status as a first-round talent.

Alabama cornerback Kool-Aid McKinstry faced disappointment as he was unable to showcase his athletic skills due to a foot injury. However, his recovery progress will determine if he can perform at training camp.

Missouri cornerback Ennis Rakestraw received a C+ grade. Rakestraw was expected to stand out due to his larger frame compared to his teammate Kris Abrams-Draine. However, he measured in at the same height and only four pounds heavier. While his 4.51-second 40-yard dash was good, it was not exceptional, and his 10-foot broad jump fell below the 35th percentile for his position since 1999.

Other winners:

Rutgers cornerback Max Melton had an outstanding performance, surpassing his brother Bo’s achievements from two years ago. Melton ran the 40-yard dash in 4.39 seconds, showcasing his speed and agility. With a 40.5-inch vertical jump and an 11-foot-4 broad jump, Melton has every reason to boast about his combine performance.

Penn State cornerback Daequan Hardy, known for his skills as a slot corner, impressed with a blazing 4.38-second 40-yard dash. Standing at nearly 5-foot-9 and weighing 179 pounds, Hardy also recorded a remarkable 42.5-inch vertical jump and a 10-foot-6 broad jump. His stock is definitely on the rise.

Texas Tech safety Tyler Owens had an unfortunate stumble during the 40-yard dash but made up for it with an exceptional performance in the jumps. Owens nearly set a combine record with a 12-foot-2 broad jump and recorded a 41-inch vertical at almost 6-foot-3 and 216 pounds. His athleticism is undeniable.

Texas Tech safety Dadrian Taylor-Demerson showcased his speed by running the fastest 40-yard dash (4.41 seconds) among the safety group. With a 38-inch vertical jump, Taylor-Demerson proved that he is a force to be reckoned with.

Other losers:

Miami safety Kamren Kinchens disappointed with a 4.65-second 40-yard dash and a 9-foot-2 broad jump. Although his 35-inch vertical saved his workout, his stocky frame may have hindered his performance. At 5-foot-11 and 203 pounds, Kinchens is unlikely to be selected in the first round.

Penn State cornerback Kalen King’s performance was a mixed bag. While his 37-inch vertical and 10-foot-2 broad jump were respectable, his 4.61-second 40-yard dash fell short of expectations. Additionally, his shorter-than-expected arm length may raise concerns among scouts.

As we eagerly await the 2024 NFL Draft, scheduled to take place from April 25-27 in Detroit, the combine provides valuable insights into the prospects’ abilities.
