NEW YORK — The giant numbers of 2024 that will shine on December 31 next to the emblematic ball that falls from the top of a building in Times Square, in New York, were illuminated this Wednesday in the same square, as a prelude to the Celebrating the new year next week.
The numbers, which have toured other cities in the United States such as Los Angeles, Tucson and Philadelphia in recent weeks, will be in the square until this Friday at 11:00 local time (16:00 GMT), to give the public the opportunity to welcome the new year early.
“I like to think that, with this opportunity, you can see and touch the future,” said James Bell, director of corporate communications for the vehicle company Kia America, in charge of transporting the structure to different states, during the presentation.
A crowd gathered in the central New York square and welcomed 2024 ahead of schedule, counting down to see the illuminated numbers, after which they chanted “Happy New Year!” in unison.
The four numbers, which make their last stop in New York, before being placed next to the circular structure at the top of the One Times Square skyscraper, use, in total, 588 low-consumption LED bulbs.
Also present at the inauguration of the lights were the president of the Times Square Alliance company, Tom Harris, and the president of the Countdown Entertainment company, co-organizers of the New Year’s celebration in Times Square.
