2024 National Vaccination Campaign Launched by Ministry of Health to Prevent Measles and Other Diseases

The Ministry of Health, through the National Center for Child and Adolescent Health (Censia), began the 2024 vaccination coverage recovery campaign, with the purpose of preventing diseases preventable by vaccination, with emphasis on poliomyelitis (hexavalent ), measles, rubella, mumps and measles in adolescents.

Approximately nine million vaccines will be administered, as well as those that prevent other infectious diseases.

The campaign will be carried out from April 1 to May 31 in the 32 federal entities, said secretariat has the annual objective of 90 percent vaccination coverage, reduce the risk of vaccine-preventable diseases, avoid the reestablishment of endemic transmission of polio, measles and rubella.

The General Directorate of Epidemiology (DGE) of the Ministry of Health reported that, so far this year and until week 11, a total of 648 suspected cases of measles or rubella have been reported, which demonstrates, above an expected value of detection of 639 expected cases, that there is no epidemiological silence in the country, which also made it possible to detect an imported case of measles in a Romanian child of four years and eight months who arrived at the Mexico City International Airport (AICM) in a flight from London.

The case detected on March 14 by international health was confirmed by serological methods and detection of viral RNA at the Institute of Epidemiological Diagnostics and Reference (Indre).

In addition, the case was notified by the National Liaison Center for International Health Regulations (CNE-RSI), Regional Contact Point of the World Health Organization (WHO); the notification to the CNE-RSI of the United Kingdom about the identification of a case of measles on a flight from London, as well as the notification to the CNE-RSI of the countries from which travelers on the same flight were identified and that information was available. .

With the purpose of avoiding community transmission of possible imported cases, Mexico promoted throughout the country the increase in coverage of the first and second doses of the vaccine against measles, rubella and mumps (SRP1 and SRP2) in children from one to nine years and the application of the vaccine against measles and Rubella (MR) in adolescents from 10 to 19 years.

It should be noted that only the population with an incomplete schedule will be vaccinated, “because immunization is not indiscriminate, so parents must consult the staff of the health centers and clinics to review the national health card and indicate if “Your child must receive some vaccine,” explained the secretary.

The measles virus is found in the mucous secretions of the nose and pharynx; Contagion occurs when the sick person coughs or sneezes and the droplets of saliva they expel enter the respiratory tract of those who have not been vaccinated and who have not suffered from this disease.

The virus also has an incubation period in the body of one to three weeks, and transmissibility occurs four days before and four days after the rash begins (the appearance of the welts on the body).

The clinical picture is characterized by the presence of fever, maculopapular rash (reddish, raised spots on the surface of the skin that are distributed from head to extremities) and are accompanied by eye irritation (conjunctivitis), rhinitis-type colds, cough, and may be observed. small spots with a white center on the oral mucosa (Koplik spots). The maculopapular rash lasts four to seven days and disappears by peeling.

“Because it is a viral disease, antibiotic treatment is not required, unless complications such as bacterial pneumonia occur. In all cases, adequate nutrition and fluid intake must be provided to prevent cases of dehydration,” he stressed.
