Between 10 and 28 January 2024 in six cities in Germany (Berlin, Düsseldorf, Hamburg, Köln, Mannheim, Munich) the qualification for the continental competition ended on Sunday, after which the EHF announced the division of the hats.
The 24 teams were divided into six groups. It was already known before the draw that the German national team was in Group A in Düsseldorf and Berlin, Croatia in Group B in Mannheim, Iceland in Group C in Munich, Norway in Group D in Berlin, and the defending European champion Sweden in Mannheim It will be placed in Group E, and the world champion Denmark will be placed in Group F in Munich. The semi-finals will be held in Cologne and Hamburg, and the final stage of the tournament will be held in Cologne.
The draw began after the welcoming speeches, but before that the renewed European Championship trophy was also presented. The Hungarian national team was placed in Group C with Iceland, Serbia and Montenegro, and will play its matches in Munich. If our team advances to the semi-finals, France, Germany or even Spain can face each other there… The Hungarian national team will meet Montenegro, Serbia and Iceland in the group stage in that order, and then they can play in the semi-finals in Cologne if they advance.
Among their three opponents, the Hungarians last met Iceland: at the World Championship in January, the best of the northern island nation led by six goals, but in the end, Máté Lékai won 30-28.
Incidentally, the opening match of the European Championship (Germany-Switzerland) is hosted by the Düsseldorf football stadium, where the organizers aim to set a world record and attract more than 50,000 spectators to the match. At the lottery, the German association announced that 40,000 tickets had already been sold!
This will be the 16th men’s continental tournament and the 14th in which the Hungarian national team will also participate. His best result so far is the sixth place in 1998, and the worst is the most recent 15th place in January of last year.
Special star guests also participated and helped with the draw: two-time European champion Lars Christiansen of Denmark, world champion Julen Aguinagalde of Spain, Olympic champion Joel Abati of France and world champion Dominik Klein of Germany.
