Around five million people in need of care live in Germany. According to the Federal Statistical Office, a large proportion of this – around 84 percent – is cared for at home. If care is provided by relatives, those in need of care from care level 2 are entitled to care allowance. Even if the care is only partially provided by relatives and additional care in kind from an outpatient care service is used, you are still entitled to care allowance. This will then be paid out proportionately. But when is the money actually in the account?
By the way: According to the Federal Ministry of Health (BMG), those in need of care are free to do what they do with the care allowance. However, it is often passed on to the caring relatives as recognition.
Care allowance: How much money will there be in 2024?
According to the BMG, the amount of the care allowance depends on the care levels from 1 to 5. In 2023, those in need of care could receive between 316 and 901 euros. As part of the 2023 care reform, the care allowance as a benefit of the care insurance will increase by five percent on January 1, 2024, according to the BMG. Payment dates 2024: When will the care allowance be transferred?
According to the care portal, the care allowance is pflege.de usually paid in advance on the first working day of the month. It makes no difference whether those in need of care are legally or privately insured.

Exceptions prove the rule. For example, the Techniker Krankenkasse (TK) states that the payment of care allowance for those insured by TK falls on the last working day before the end of the month for the following month. The Barmer health insurance company simply states that the care allowance is transferred monthly in advance and does not specify a fixed date.
By the way: If care allowance and care benefits in kind – the entitlement here will also increase by five percent from 2024 – are received together, the care allowance will be louder pflege.de not transferred at the beginning of the month, but only afterwards.
Care allowance after the initial application: How much is it and when is it paid out?
If you apply for a new care allowance, there may be differences in the payment in the first month. That’s how it sounds pflege.de For the first month after submitting the application, you are usually only entitled to a partial entitlement to care allowance. In addition, the first payment will not take place until the month after the application is submitted.
Background information: Care allowance cannot be applied for retroactively. Therefore, entitlement to the benefit only exists from the day of the care allowance application. In order to calculate the proportionate care allowance, each calendar month is set as a flat rate of 30 days.
Example: A person with care level 4 applies for care allowance on January 11, 2024. Only from this point on is she entitled to the benefit. Instead of the full 764 euros for 30 days, she is only entitled to around 509 euros for the remaining 20 days in January.
