“2023 TUV Ranking: Top and Bottom 4-5 Year Old Cars by Reliability”

Mazda is the top-ranked Japanese manufacturer, and the bottom of the ranking will shock you

With the dramatic increase in the price of new cars recently, more and more people are turning to the second-hand sector. For the money they would charge you today for a new subcompact with a low level of equipment, you can get a 4-5 year old higher end car with more extras. And with basic units that are still far from the end of their resource.

Kia Rio is the top ranked Korean car. For the first time, there are three representatives of both South Korea and France in the green zone

Ideally, this will be a car traded in by its first owner for a new one. But on the Bulgarian secondary market, you can very easily come across an accident victim written off by Western insurers, patched up and restored to a good appearance in some local garage service. If you avoid such a pitfall, a five-year-old car can be a very good compromise between price and convenience. However, each individual model and manufacturer has its own characteristics, as can be seen from the annual ranking of the German Technical Inspection Association (TUV). After we introduced you to the 2023 results for the 10-11-year-olds, 8-9-year-olds and 6-7-year-olds, now it’s the turn of the 4-5-year-old cars, that is, manufactured in 2017-2018.

The readings from the TUV reviews, although a useful guide, should not be blindly accepted. They reflect both the reliability of the car itself and the care of the owner, and yet they refer to machines driven on German roads, on German fuels, and serviced in German workshops.

With such new cars, the differences in the percentage of damage are not that great. Three Korean cars (Kia Rio, Hyundai i30, Hyundai i20) and three French ones (Renault Scenic, Renault Captur and, surprisingly against the background of previous years, Citroen C3) fall into the green zone for the first time.

At the bottom, instead of the usual mixture of Romanians and Italians, there are also quite a few representatives of Germany, and even one of Japan. Almost the entire Ford lineup is already in the red zone, and the inclusion of expensive BMW and Volkswagen models in the bottom 10 is downright shocking, despite their much higher average mileage.
