The 2023 Tanah Papua Wonder Festival presents a significant opportunity to showcase and uplift Papua’s tourism potential, as stated by the Ministry of Tourism and Creative Economy. Scheduled in Sorong district, Southwest Papua, the festival marks the district’s economic progression. Nusantara tourism marketing director, Dwi Marhen, expressed the festival’s potential in promoting the region and attracting more tourists in the future. It is essential to conduct such activities regularly to increase the area’s fame and optimize the region’s potential. In anticipation of an economic recession, the ministry aims to encourage the movement of Indonesian tourists by getting 1.4 billion domestic, and 7.4 million foreign tourist visits this year. It is projected that if each person spends IDR 2.4 million on transportation, hotel stays, souvenirs, etc., the tourism and creative economy sectors can boost by IDR 3.210 trillion (around US$218 billion). A survey revealed that the primary reason for many tourists coming to Indonesia is to witness the cultural arts, and Southwest Papua is a rich source of culture, which the local government must utilize. Additionally, the foreign tourists seek unique experiences and events, such as this festival, and not just breathtaking landscapes. Therefore, local governments must organize events that can capture the traveler’s attention. Overall, the 2023 Tanah Papua Wonder Festival provides an excellent opportunity to leverage the region’s tourism appeal, attract more tourists, and drive economic development.
