TEMPO.CO, Jakarta – The July full moon known as Buck Moon was published on July 3, 2023 as supermoon. For those who like to observe the sky or take pictures of objects in space, of course this event will be interesting.
On supermoon, disk moon looks bigger and brighter in the night sky, but 2023’s Buck Moon will be even more exciting as it starts the season with four straight supermoons. Supermoons can cause 30 percent of the moon’s brightness and a 14 percent increase in the moon’s disk as seen from Earth. But these differences are usually not visible to the naked eye unless one is watching the moon every night.
Supermoons are the result of the moon being closer to Earth during a full moon. Eclipse expert and retired NASA astrophysicist Fred Espanak explains that during a Buck Moon, the moon is only 361,934 kilometers from Earth. Meanwhile, when compared with the estimated average distance of around 382,900 kilometers.
To note, the supermoon occurs because the moon’s orbit around the earth is not a perfect circle. Due to the influence of Earth’s gravity, the moon’s orbit is elliptical, that is, it looks like an elongated circle or an oval.
This means that there are times when in a 27-day orbit the moon is closer to Earth and other times it is farther away. A supermoon occurs when the moon is in the full moon phase of its 29.5 day lunar cycle and is at perigee, the closest point to Earth in its orbit.

For the Jakarta area, according to records from the Jakarta Amateur Astronomy Association, the astronomy club under the Jakarta Planetarium and Observatory, the full moon will peak on July 3 2023 at 18.38 WIB. The full moon rises at 17.44 WIB and sets on July 4 2023 at 06.42 WIB.
Another supermoon
If you missed the beautiful view last night, don’t worry because there are still three more supermoons. Note the time, the next supermoon will appear on Tuesday, August 1 in the form of the Sturgeon Full Moon. Espanak said that during this supermoon, the distance between the earth and its natural satellite is 357,530 kilometers.
The second supermoon in the form of a Blue Moon will appear on August 30, 2023. This will be a special event for moon watchers as the moon will be closest visible during this summer period of the supermoon, only 357,344 kilometers away.
Just as summer 2023 ends, on September 23 to be precise, so does this supermoon festival, which ends on September 28 with the appearance of the Full Corn Moon. It is recorded that the distance of the moon is 361,552 kilometers from the earth.
According to In The Sky, the next supermoon will fall on September 18, 2024. However, next year there will only be two supermoons, namely a month later on October 18, 2024 to be exact.
