The 2023 summer transfer window has now officially started, but numerous transfers have already been officially announced. We regularly summarize the most interesting transfers from the national and international football scene in compact four-packs.
Whom
LA 24 POR | Celtic Glasgow – > Al-Ittihad Club
It was probably only a few weeks ago that Celtic Glasgow first thought they would get the highest transfer fee in club history from Saudi Arabia. Portuguese left winger Jota – not to be confused with Liverpool’s Diogo Jota – has joined Al-Ittihad Club from Celtic for €29.1m on a contract with them until 2026. The 24-year-old former Portugal U21 team player, who hasn’t won a single Match in the senior national team, scored 28 goals and 26 assists in 83 competitive games for Celtic. Before joining Glasgow, Jota was a reservist at Benfica and on a year’s loan at Valladolid. Celtic took him from Benfica for €16.2m in the summer of 2021. Jota will now be teammates with Karim Benzema and N’Golo Kanté at Al-Ittihad.
Marcelo Brozóvic
ZM, 30, CRO | Inter Mailand – > Al-Nassr FC
The 87-time Croatian international and 2018 runner-up Marcelo Brozovic is also moving to Saudi Arabia. The prudent central midfielder joins Al-Nassr FC on a three-year deal, becoming Cristiano Ronaldo’s team-mate. Brozovic last played a full 8 ½ years for Inter Milan, which once paid three million euros on loan and finally five million to Dinamo Zagreb. Brozovic was a regular player and top performer for the Interisti. Al-Nassr has now paid Inter 18 million euros to pry the Croatian out of his contract.
Roberto Firmino
ST, 31, BRA | Liverpool FC – > Al-Ahli
And also Roberto Firmino signs in Saudi Arabia. In contrast to his colleagues mentioned above, the 55-time Brazil international is moving there on a free transfer. Newly promoted Al-Ahli Saudi FC have previously signed Chelsea goalkeeper Edouard Mendy and also have a number of lesser-known African internationals. Firmino has now signed for Al-Ahli until the summer of 2026, having previously played for Liverpool for eight years, contributing 111 goals and 79 assists in 362 competitive games. Most recently, he was also under discussion as a possible new signing at Olympique Lyon, Real Madrid and Barcelona.
Felix Finish
OM, 22, GER | VfL Wolfsburg – > Borussia Dortmund
Borussia Dortmund continues to invest 30 million euros from the “Bellingham millions” and ties attacking midfielder Felix Nmecha from VfL Wolfsburg until the summer of 2028. The 22-year-old went through the youth of Manchester City and last played for two years for Lower Saxony. The transfer was preceded by a controversy because Nmecha attracted attention with potentially homophobic statements. Dortmund President Reinhold Lunow had also expressed concerns about a commitment, but then exchanged views with Hans-Joachim Watzke and finally gained confidence in the newcomer.
