The number of new cancer diagnoses is increasing. In 2023, 128,000 new patients were diagnosed with cancer, two thousand more than the year before. The number of cancer cases increased, particularly in the provinces of Drenthe, Limburg and Zeeland. How did that happen?
More than 900,000 people currently live with cancer in the Netherlands. This is evident from figures from the Dutch Cancer Registry that the Integrated Cancer Center of the Netherlands (IKNL) shares on World Cancer Day on Sunday, February 4.
The distribution of the number of new diagnoses per province is striking. In Drenthe, Limburg and Zeeland, this number is correspondingly higher than in the rest of the Netherlands: Drenthe leads the way with 890.55 new cases per 100,000 inhabitants, followed by Limburg with 850.43 and Zeeland has 811.76 new diagnoses per 100,000 inhabitants. . “This concerns the so-called crude rate,” explains Jolanda Sinha, spokesperson for IKNL. “These are the raw incidences, not corrected for population composition or age structure.”

Most aging
She cites the relatively high ages in these areas as the cause. But these types of annual figures can of course always fluctuate and say nothing about a trend. Next year, the number of diagnoses may be higher in other provinces. “But these three provinces have the most aging population, and it is simply the case that more older people are diagnosed with cancer.”
The fact that the environment in Drenthe and Limburg is greener and therefore life seems healthier and that a fresh, healthy sea breeze blows in Zeeland does not influence these figures. “Especially in Zeeland, the number of skin cancer cases is quite high, 789 diagnoses per 100,000 people. This could also be related to more hours of sunshine in Zeeland, and it is known that skin cancer is often caused by UV radiation.”
The new number of cancer diagnoses is proportionately the lowest in the Randstad. The disease was diagnosed least often in Utrecht (636 times per 100,000 inhabitants). This is followed by Flevoland (644), North Holland (660) and South Holland (664 times.
World Cancer Day
Sunday, February 4, is World Cancer Day. On this day, worldwide attention is paid to the impact that the disease has. This year the theme is ‘Continuing to live with cancer’. Healthcare organizations will open their doors on and around World Cancer Day this weekend to show what they can do for people with cancer and their loved ones. From a lecture about a treatment method to a listening ear, and from a fitness challenge to walking coaching. kanker.nl/wereldkankerdag
