Jakarta, CNBC Indonesia – The year 2023 marks quite extreme climate change. In fact, a number of areas felt hotter than usual during the last dry season.
The threat of dry heat in a number of regions in Indonesia is also one of the articles that is widely read on CNBC Indonesia 2023.
Since the middle of this year, Indonesia has been hit by the El Nino climate phenomenon. The Meteorology, Climatology and Geophysics Agency (BMKG) said the temperature record will occur in 2023.
“This year is a year full of record temperatures. This condition has never happened before, where heat waves occurred in many places simultaneously,” said Head of BMKG, Dwikorita in a statement on the official BMKG website, (18/11/2023).
“Last July 2023, the heat wave that hit West America even reached 53 degrees Celsius,” added Dwikorita.
The temperatures from June to August are the hottest in history. July is also designated as the hottest time.
In fact, this record beats the conditions in 2016. Dwikorita explained that this phenomenon occurred due to climate change and put additional pressure on scarce water resources.
“The reality of climate evolution means that 2023 has the potential to become the hottest year in the history of climate recording, beating 2016,” explained Dwikorita.
7 Areas Threatened by Dry Heat
All areas will experience very rare rain conditions. Apart from that, it is also facing drought.
“So, that’s an area that needs to be watched out for from August to October 2023, most of Indonesia’s southern part of the equator, the prediction is that it will experience very little rain except for spots that have topographical heights,” said Ardhasena.
At that time, BMKG estimated that the El Nino peak would occur from August to October and continue until early 2024.
BMKG also predicts that the impact of El Nino will be felt in several regions of Indonesia. The locations are spread south of the Equator.
In total there are seven areas with the impact of El Nino. These areas range from central to southern Sumatra, southern Riau, Jambi, Lampung, Banten and West Java.
Impact on Agriculture
El Nino which occurred last August to October also had a big impact on several things. A phenomenon that triggers drought and can cause crop failure.
For this reason, BMKG had asked the Ministry of Agriculture to prepare and make several efforts. One of the areas that experienced the worst El Nino, West Java also has quite a lot of agricultural areas.
“West Java has a lot of rice fields, if they are affected by El Nino which is quite severe, then they have to take preparedness steps, such as managing rainwater, or harvesting rainwater like in Central Sulawesi,” said Plt. BMKG Deputy for Climatology Ardhasena Sopaheluwakan last September.
Meanwhile, Dwikorita said that drought conditions could increase the vulnerability of world food stocks. This is predicted to continue to happen in the future.
“FAO or the Food and Agriculture Organization even predicts that if this continues to happen, in 2050 a famine will occur due to the food crisis,” said Dwikorita.
Drought at that time occurred in many places. A number of dams, lakes and rivers in the world appear to be shrinking or even drying up.
Apart from Indonesia, several other countries also reported heat waves and record-breaking temperatures. Reports come in such as India, Bangladesh and China.
