A number celestial phenomenon happened this month, including among others Puppid meteor shower-Velid which takes place from December 1 to December 15 2023.
The Puppid-Velid meteor shower is a meteor shower whose radiant point (the point of origin of meteors) is near the star Gamma Velorum (Regor), which borders the constellation Vela and the constellation Puppis.
The meteor shower originates from the remaining dust from Comet 96P/Machholz which orbits the Sun for a period of 1.93 years.
This shooting star occurs every time this debris enters the Earth’s atmosphere. This comet will later burn up at an altitude of 70-100 kilometers from Earth.
The Puppid-Velid meteor shower phenomenon comes from the Southeast to the Southwest. This meteor shower has different intensities in each region of Indonesia.
In Jakarta, for example, the meteor shower will only be visible before around 20:34 every night, when the radiant point appears above the eastern horizon, the meteor shower will be visible until just before dawn at around 05:04.
Meanwhile in Semarang, this meteor shower will only be visible at around 20.17 WIB every night when the radiant point appears above the eastern horizon. This will last until dawn at around 04.48 WIB.
Currently, the earth’s rotation makes Jakarta face optimally in the direction of the meteor’s arrival, maximizing the amount of vertical downward rain, resulting in a short path close to the point of emission.
At other times, the number of meteors burning up in Jakarta will be fewer, and they tend to enter the atmosphere at an oblique angle, resulting in long-lived meteors that can traverse large areas of the sky before burning up completely.

It is predicted that the intensity of the Puppid-Velid meteor shower can last up to 7 meteors per hour.
