The Paralympic Games have begun in Paris. They last until September 8. A total of 549 awards will be presented in 22 sports.
Due to the invasion by Russian troops into Ukraine, athletes from the Russian Federation are participating in the Games in a neutral status. They may only attend the opening and closing ceremonies as spectators.
88 Russians were allowed to compete. On August 28, it was announced that the French authorities had not issued entry visas to two athletes.
At the Tokyo 2021 Paralympics, the Russian team took fourth place in the team competition with 36 gold medals, 33 silver and 49 bronze medals. Russians were not allowed to attend the 2022 Winter Paralympics in Beijing, which began two weeks after Russia’s invasion of Ukraine.
At the Olympics in Paris, due to the disqualification of the Russian Olympic Committee, only 15 athletes from the Russian Federation competed (in neutral status). They won one silver medal.
