Free agency has been reduced to a trickle and the draft has ended. A first look at the 32 teams and their position in the 2023 NFL standings.
It’s been a busy offseason for the 32 NFL teams. Between the many departures and arrivals of free agents and the acquisition of key veterans through trades, it has been a busy season. There were 259 selections during the three days of the NFL Draft in Kansas City.
Of course, it’s home to defending Super Bowl champions and a team that has played on Super Sunday in three of the last five seasons. It is therefore not surprising that the Chiefs occupy the first place in this first ranking of the NFL. What about the other 31 clubs?
2023 NFL Rankings, After NFL Draft: #32-29
32
Arizona Cardinals
The Arizona Cardinals have won just four games in 2022. Former Eagles defensive coordinator Jonathan Gannon is the new head coach. Quarterback Kyler Murray is on the mend after tearing his anterior cruciate ligament late last year.
He wanted the team to pick Ohio State tackle Paris Johnson Jr. and that’s what happened. GM Monti Ossenfort earned a first-round pick and two third-round picks in 2024.
31
The Indianapolis Colts
General manager Chris Ballard didn’t budge on the first night of the draft and opted for the talented but somewhat raw Anthony Richardson. He could be placed behind former Eagles player Gardner Minhsew, who is familiar with new coach Shane Steichen’s system.
Ballard got 12 picks, evenly split between offense and defense. Steichen inherits a series of seven defeats at the end of the season.
30
Chicago Bears
A year ago, the Bears got a new general manager and a new head coach. The first season of the Ryan Poles/Matt Eberflus regime ended with the NFL’s worst record (3-14) and a season-ending 10-game losing streak.
Chicago hands over first choice to Carolina for catcher DJ Moore and more. The Bears have allowed the most points in the league in 2022 and have used seven of this year’s 10 picks on defense.
29
Washington Commanders
Ron Rivera’s club were the only NFC East team last season not to finish with a winning record and were also the only club in the division not to reach the playoffs.
The Commanders seem determined to move forward with second-year professional Sam Howell at quarterback, although the team has signed journeyman Jacoby Brissett. Washington has focused on improving the offensive line during the recruiting period.
