In 2023, the new car market in Latvia will grow by 11%, according to the information compiled by Citadele Leasing. Most often, new car transactions were made for Toyota, Škoda and VW cars, and it was various Toyota cars that became the most purchased car models for both individuals and companies.
The top three is still the same
Similar to before, in 2023 also three brands of cars – Toyota, Škoda and VW, which are popular among both legal entities and private individuals, figure prominently in car purchase transactions.
After a year’s break, the leading position of the most popular car model in the new car category has been regained by Toyota Corolla, ahead of last year’s leader Toyota RAV4. Toyota Yaris Cross, Toyota Hilux and Škoda Octavia cars are also among the top five car models.
In the past year, private individuals most often bought Toyota RAV4, Škoda Kamiq, Cupra Formentor, Škoda Karoq and Škoda Kodiaq cars through leasing.
On the other hand, last year companies mostly added to their fleets with models such as Toyota Yaris Cross, Toyota Corolla, Toyota RAV4, Škoda Octavia and Škoda Kodiaq.
“Toyota’s regular presence in the top of the most popular cars can be explained by the interest of legal entities – this car is basically popular with car sharing companies, as well as public sector organizations. This is mainly due to the fact that Toyota has a wide range of hybrid engines, which is available for almost all offered models,” the data is commented on by Đirts Glazers, chairman of the board of Citadele Leasing.
Electric cars are chosen more and more often
Compared to a year ago, the choice of electric cars has grown significantly – the number of transactions with electric cars has increased by 56%. On the other hand, the share of classic internal combustion engines, i.e. gasoline and diesel cars, on Latvian roads decreased by 2% last year – in 2022, they accounted for 91% of new car market transactions, and this year – 89%.
In the electric car segment, VW, Nissan, Tesla, Škoda and Hyundai brand cars are clearly the most popular. The most frequently purchased electric car model last year was the Nissan Leaf, followed by Škoda Enyaq and Tesla Model Y. According to G. Glazer, Tesla purchases in most cases are made by legal entities, among which are mainly car sales and car rental companies.
Among private individuals, the choice of car colors is still dominated by neutral tones – gray, white and black – in 2023 they will make up 64% of car purchases. Meanwhile, in the category of bright colors, the leaders are blue (10%), red (8%) and green (6%).
