2023 Municipal Elections in Malaga: PP Takes Benalmádena Mayor’s Office from PSOE – Results and Analysis

In these 2023 municipal elections, many of the large municipalities in the province of Malaga have once again obtained results similar to 2019 and few have changed their political color. However, in addition to Vélez-Málaga, one of them has been Benalmádena, since the PP has taken the Mayor’s Office from the PSOE by winning six councilors and obtaining the 13 necessary for the absolute majority.

In total, 10,455 people registered in Benalmádena have chosen the PP with Juan Antonio Lara at the head to govern his municipality. This represents almost 44% of the support. The PSOE of the previous mayor, Victor Navas, has obtained 7,726 votes, 32% of the total. This has earned him 9 councilors, so he loses two compared to the previous elections.

Two other political forces will make up the municipal corporation for the next four years. Vox He remains with the two councilors he obtained in 2019 after receiving 2,001 ballots in his favor, 8.3% of the votes, and the confluence of the left With Andalusia gets 1 councilor and loses one of the two that Izquierda Unida obtained in the last municipal elections.

Regarding participation, it was 52.52%, a little higher than in 2019, which did not exceed 51.7%.

In the 2019 elections, the PSOE managed to position itself as the first force with the most votes in Benalmádena. The party, led by the socialist Víctor Navas, was only two councilors short of the absolute majority. In total, the party obtained 8,389 votes (37.45%), which translates into 11 councilors, four more than in the previous 2015 elections.

IU retained the two councilors it had; while the PP lost two, with 4,940 votes (22.05%). Ciudadanos achieved three councilors and highlighted the Vox’s emergence into City Hallwith 1,837 votes and two councilors, while Costa del Sol Sí Podemos lost its representation.

The political scene in the town has been characterized in recent years by some political stability due to the agreements reached by the socialists to govern for two consecutive terms, with a government formed by PSOE, IU, Podemos, Cs and Alternativa for Benalmádena between 2015 and 2019 and in coalition with IU from 2019 to 2022, and after a motion of censorship presented by the PP and Unión de Centro Benalmádena (UCB) that allowed the popular Paloma García to govern between 2012 and 2015. Now it is once again a municipality of the Popular Party.
