MADRID – On April 8, 2023, it will be fifty years since the death of Spanish artist Pablo Picasso. With “Celebración Picasso 1973-2023”, people in Spain want to celebrate his work and his artistic heritage. Spain does not do it alone, because France, where the artist lived, worked and died, also participates in the diffusion of the work of one of the most influential artists of the 20th century.
Pablo Picasso was born in Málaga on October 25, 1881 and died in the French city of Mougins on April 8, 1973. He is considered one of the most famous painters and artists in the history of Western art. His expressive, free and multifaceted way of expressing himself continues to influence contemporary art and reflection.
Of Picasso celebration 1973-2023 aims to appreciate the career of an essentially European artist. He has produced universal symbols on an international level such as the famous ‘Guernica’, a painting that is still (unfortunately) current and visible in the Reina Sofia museum in Madrid.
In honor of his 50th year since his death, there are more than 50 Picasso exhibitions around the world, including 16 in Spain. In the center are four cities in which Picasso lived: Málaga, his hometown; A Coruña, the city where he began to paint and where his sister is buried, who died young; Madrid, the city where he studied; Barcelona, the city where he lived as a young man. The Guggenheim of Bilbao also participates.
Many of the exhibitions will address the question of how Picasso related to other great Spanish artists such as Miró, Velázquez and El Greco. There will also be several special Picasso exhibitions in the south of France, where Picasso lived for much of his life. On website from the travel and culture magazine about Spain and the Spanish-speaking world ESPANJE! a selection of the exhibitions in Spain is listed.
