2023 Geminid Meteor Shower: Spectacular Celestial Event in Malang City

Malang City, blok-a.com – Lovers of the Malang City space phenomenon should start getting ready to welcome the upcoming Special Guest. The Geminid meteor shower will decorate the skies of Malang City from 13 to 15 December 2023.

The Geminid meteor shower is the ‘heaviest’ meteor shower that we can observe in 2023. The Indonesian Aeronautics and Space Research Organization (ORPA) said that space enthusiasts will be treated to a high intensity meteor shower of up to more than 100 meteors per hour.

In 2023, ORPA predicts the Geminid meteor shower will produce around 108 to 134 meteors per hour at its peak on December 15. Supported by the moon which has just entered its initial crescent phase so the sky is darker, it is certain that this year there will be more clearly visible meteors.

The Geminid meteor shower is one of the most dramatic and interesting celestial phenomena to observe. Most Geminid meteors have high speeds and bright colors, creating a spectacular appearance in the night sky.

Not only that, some meteors can even leave a shining trail moments after passing by, enhancing the magical appearance of the night sky. Therefore, this meteor shower is considered to be one of the most interesting celestial events every year.

Its name is taken from the constellation Gemini because its radiant point, the place in the sky where meteors appear to originate, is located near the constellation. The Geminid meteors are not like other meteor showers that originate from comets; instead, they originate from an object called 3200 Phaethon, which is an asteroid approaching the Sun.

For skywatchers, the Geminids provide an extraordinary opportunity to observe the beauty of the universe and increase understanding of space dynamics.

So what needs to be prepared? Star binoculars are certainly a good observation support tool, but this time the meteor shower is predicted to be easily observed with the naked eye because the sky is darker thanks to the initial crescent moon phase.

A dark, unobstructed viewing location is much more important. The Geminid meteor shower will appear from the northeastern sky of Malang City and subside in the northwest sky as the sun rises. Hopefully the sky isn’t cloudy, okay? (mg1/bob)
