KOMPAS.com – The peak phase of the Geminid meteor shower will occur on Thursday-Friday (14-15/12/2023).
The Geminid meteor shower actually took place from December 4 to December 20, quoted from the Royal Museums Greenwich.
However, the peak of the meteor shower will occur on December 14 2023 evening to December 15 2023 morning before sunrise.
So, can this incident be seen from Indonesia?
50 meteors per hour decorate the Indonesian sky
Research staff at the Bosscha Observatory in Bandung, West Java, Agus Triono, confirmed that December 14-15 2023 will be the peak phase of the Geminid meteor shower.
He also confirmed that this phenomenon could be seen from Indonesia.
“On that date, the Gemini constellation could be seen clearly at around 20.00 WIB at night. “So this event (the Geminid meteor shower) should have been visible throughout the night,” said Agus to Kompas.com, Tuesday (12/12/2023).
However, meteors can only be seen if the weather is clear and the sky is dark and free of light pollution.
“You can view it directly, or with a digital camera if you want to record it,” he said.
Later, Agus said that there would be around 50 meteors per hour visible at the peak of the Geminid meteor shower.
In fact, if weather and sky conditions are favorable, as many as 120 meteors will be seen per hour.
“The Geminid meteor shower is an annual event, every December. “So it’s as special as other meteor showers,” he said.
The process of the Geminid meteor shower
Agus said that meteor showers occur when the Earth passes through the remains of a comet or asteroid in its orbit.
“Unlike other meteor showers which usually come from comet tails, these Geminids are caused by dust from the remains of the asteroid 3200 Phaethon,” he said.
The remains of the asteroid will then burn up when it enters Earth’s atmosphere and produce what looks like a “shooting star”.
At that time, the dust from the remains of the asteroid 3200 Phaethon produced a meteor shower when seen from the Earth’s surface.
However, he confirmed that this meteor shower would not have any impact on Earth.
“There is no impact (on the Earth),” he said.
