The 2023 Eurovision Song Contest will begin on May 9 with the first semi-final. The second semi-final will take place two days later, on May 11. On the other hand, the 2023 Eurovision winner will be announced at the final on May 13.
As you know, an innovation was also introduced this year – the jury’s vote will no longer be taken into account in the semi-finals, everything will be decided only by the audience. The countries participating in the respective semi-finals, as well as the “big five” of Eurovision and last year’s winner, Ukraine, will be able to vote for their favorite.
37 countries will participate in this year’s competition. Montenegro and North Macedonia have announced that they will not participate in Eurovision due to the high costs. Russia was excluded from the competition due to the invasion of Ukraine.

Ukraine will perform as 19th, while the United Kingdom will close the show in 26th position.
The grand final of Eurovision is expected in Liverpool on Saturday, May 13. For the first time in the history of the contest, countries that are not participating in the contest will also be able to vote for songs. Online votes from the “rest of the world” will be tallied and converted into points that will have the same weight as a single member in both semi-finals and the grand final.
The “Big Five” (France, Germany, Spain, Italy and the United Kingdom), as well as the current champions Ukraine, will not participate in any of the semi-finals. However, their local viewers will be able to vote for one of their favourites.
This year, the Eurovision Song Contest will be held in Liverpool. The event will be held at the 11,000 capacity M&S Bank Arena. The UK last hosted the Eurovision Song Contest in 1998 in Birmingham, but London, Edinburgh and Brighton have also hosted it. Britain last won the competition in 1997 with Katrina and the Waves, one of five British successes since the competition began in 1956.
Latvia’s representatives in Eurovision – group “Sudden Lights”
Latvia will be represented at the 67th international Eurovision Song Contest in Liverpool, Great Britain, and the “Supernova 2023” contest is won by the group “Sudden Lights” with the song “Aija”.
Latvia has participated in the Eurovision Song Contest 22 times, debuting in the 2000 contest, when Latvia was represented by Brainstorm with the song “My Star”, winning 3rd place.
Latvia’s first, so far only, victory was in the 2002 competition, when it won Mary N with the song “I Wanna”. The 2003 competition took place in Riga, thanks to the victory achieved the previous year.
The 2020 competition did not take place due to the Covid-19 epidemic. Instead, the show “Eurovision 2020: Europe Shines!” was broadcast, honoring the countries that should have participated in the contest. Samanta Tīna, the chosen representative of Latvia, also participated in the special show with the song “Still Breathing”. This is the first time in the 63-year history of Eurovision broadcasting that the final song contest does not take place.
It will be possible to watch the first semi-final of Eurovision live on the LTV1 channel at 22.00
Toms Grēviņš will commentate on the live broadcasts of the Eurovision semi-finals and finals on Latvian Television, Lauris Reiniks will join him in the finals this year as well.
