2023 was a successful year for the automotive industry in Europe – 12,847,481 new cars were sold, which is 13.7 percent more than in 2022.
Sales figures went up for 16 months, only in December 2023 the first minuses were recorded in the amount of 3.8 percent.
All major markets in Europe showed growth, including Italy (+18.9%), the UK (+17.9%), Spain (+16.7%) and France (+16.1%), with only Germany remaining at “moderate” result (+7.3%).
The year 2023 was significant in that electric vehicles increased their market share to 15.7% (in 2022 it was 13.9%), for the first time overtaking cars with diesel engines (11.7%), which in 2022 still occupied 14.5% of the market.
Cars with gasoline engines were still the most in demand (35.7%), while hybrid cars and the already mentioned electric cars are the second and third choices with 26.4 and 15.7 percent, respectively. Next come cars with diesel engines (11.9%), plug-in hybrids (7.7%), leaving only 2.5% for other types of fuel (LPG, hydrogen, etc.).
According to the number of cars sold, Volkswagen is still at the top with 25.9% of European registrations, followed by Stellantis (16.6%), Renault group (9.7%), Hyundai group (8.6%) and BMW group with 7.1 %. It is followed by Toyota Group (6.9%), Mercedes-Benz (5.5%), Ford (4.0%) and Tesla (2.9%).
