The Christmas holidays are warmer this year than is usually the case. Despite heavy downpours on Monday evening, the average temperature is 11.9 degrees. That is the second highest temperature ever measured during Christmas.
In only one year was it even warmer: 2015. Then Christmas had an average temperature of 14.2 degrees. 1974 and 2016 are close to this year’s average maximum temperature of 11.8 degrees, writes Weatheronline.
This year’s high temperature is mainly due to Christmas Day. The maximum temperature in De Bilt then reached 12.5 degrees. The maximum temperature on Boxing Day has already been measured in the night from Monday to Tuesday: 11.3 degrees. It will most likely not be that warm on Tuesday afternoon.
In recent years, warm Christmas days have been measured more often. On the list of the ten warmest Christmas days ever, half of the places have now been taken up by temperatures measured this century.
The temperature will drop slightly in the coming days, writes Weeronline. We may then be heading towards temperatures that are normal for this time of year: around 6 degrees during the day and temperatures of around freezing point at night.
