They contribute an indispensable part to our music culture and yet they are the ones who usually get the least applause for their work: the operators of live music venues. Since 2013, the Applause Award has been honoring these same people for their impact and socio-cultural significance. Since 2015, a special prize has also been awarded for socially relevant topics – this year the topics were awareness, inclusion and sustainability.
The prize is not just a recognition of important work, but also comes with prize money of between 8,000 and 50,000 euros. With 96 prizes awarded in six different categories, the State Minister for Culture and Media, Claudia Roth, awarded prize money totaling 2.4 million euros last evening. The anniversary edition of the award ceremony took place in the Hanover pavilion. The main prize winners were recognized with personal laudations from musician Derya Yıldırım, Milli Dance from the rap duo Waving the Guns and jazz musician Aki Takase. Live music was provided yesterday by Salomea, Steintor Herrenchor and Uche Yara.
