KOMPAS.com – Indonesia temporarily tops the best runner-up standings for the 2023 AFF U23 Cup. Garuda Muda has a chance to qualify for the semifinals, but it still depends on the results of other teams.
Indonesia has completed two preliminary round matches for the 2023 AFF U23 Cup which this time was held in Thailand.
Of the two matches that have been played, the Indonesian U23 national team made by Shin Tae-yong has won one loss and one win.
Ramadhan Sananta lost 1-2 to Malaysia in the first match of Group B, then won 1-0 over Timor Leste in the second match, Monday (20/8/2023).
Indonesia certainly cannot win Group B. However, Garuda Muda still has the chance to qualify for the semifinals through the best runner-up route.
The four semifinalist teams for the 2023 AFF U23 Cup come from the winners of each group plus the best runner-up team.
One team that has definitely qualified for the semifinals is the host Thailand who locked up the status of Group A champion with perfect results three times played three wins.
Cambodia was actually able to rank second in Group A after Thailand.
However, despite being able to collect four points in the group phase, Cambodia failed to compete in the best runner-up standings.
This is because the three points that Cambodia got thanks to a 5-0 win over Brunei (last place in Group A) are not counted in the best runner-up standings.

As a result, the final runner-up standings for the 2023 AFF U23 Cup consecutively are currently occupied by Indonesia (main 2, score 3), the Philippines (1, 1), and Cambodia (2,1) who are certain to be eliminated.
The Philippines, which is in second place in the best runner-up standings, has the opportunity to overtake Indonesia if it can defeat Vietnam in the final match of Group C.
Apart from that, Timor Leste, which has not won any points, still has a chance to qualify for the semifinals via the best runner-up route if they are able to win big over Malaysia in the last match of Group B.
The Timor Leste vs Malaysia and Vietnam vs Philippines matches will be held today, Tuesday (22/8/2023) at 20.00 WIB.
These two matches will determine whether or not Indonesia will qualify for the semifinals of the 2023 AFF U23 Cup.
