2022 US Open: Matthew Fitzpatrick Takes First Place with Strong Performance

After the opening round, the 2022 US Open winner from Sheffield took first place with five other professionals. In the second lap he pulled away by one shot and on Saturday he was able to gain a small cushion for the first time.

Fitzpatrick is the undisputed star of the 2.5 million euro tournament on the Valais high plateau. For the fans and tournament director Yves Mittaz, he would also be the desired winner, after the majority of outsiders had prevailed in recent years.

The 29-year-old Fitzpatrick played consistently at a high level in the first three rounds. He continuously improved the total score to 15 strokes under par. With his victories in 2017 and 2018 he proved that the par 70 course named after Severiano Ballesteros suits him very well.

Matthew Fitzpatrick, however, remains uncertain with ten players trailing four strokes or less with the final 18 holes. Also in the chasing group are Fitzpatrick’s brother Alex and up-and-coming young Dane Nicolai Höjgaard.

The Swiss Cedric Gugler and Jeremy Freiburghaus, who qualified for the two final rounds, performed with varying degrees of success on Saturday. Gugler improved to 50th with 69 strokes, while Freiburghaus dropped nine places with a bad round of 75 strokes. He is now 71.
