Perez joined the pits on lap 19, making the third position filled by Russell with new tires compared to the two drivers in front of him. Hamilton’s entry into the pits on lap 20 lifted Russell’s position to second. Sainz returned to the top three.
Leclerc eventually pitted on lap 22, but the Monaco rider lost just one position and returned to the track in second, about 2 seconds behind Russell, but ahead of Sainz.
On lap 26, Russell and Leclerc’s gap was less than a second, Leclerc turned on his DRS to overtake, but Russell was still holding on. It was only on lap 31 that Leclerx was finally able to secure the leading position.
Lap 40, Leclerc pitted, changed tires to the hard type. Similarly, Russell is getting more and more difficult with the rear tires. Sainz poked into the top spot, followed by Hamilton. While Leclerc entered in third position.
Max Verstappen, who had not competed in the top flight since the beginning of the race, only managed to poke into the third position on lap 41, but the Dutch driver slipped on lap 42 and his position was taken back by Leclerc.
Verstappen chased again, and finally managed to overtake Leclerc on lap 45. Hamilton led the race on lap 48 after Sainz entered the pits. Verstappen poked into second position, followed by Leclerc. Sainz entered the track in fifth position, behind Russell.
With a difference of less than 5 seconds behind Hamilton on the 50th lap, Verstappen had a great chance of overtaking the remaining 20 laps. And the effort was successful on lap 52, when Hamilton entered the pits for the second time.
Verstappen led the race, followed by Leclerc, Russell, Sainz and Hamilton who returned to the track in fifth position. On lap 54, Russell who wore medium tires overtook Leclerc who wore hard tires.
Leclerc pitted on lap 55, changing his tires to soft. Sainz entered the top three, followed by Hamilton and Perez in the top five. Sainz and Hamilton also use soft tires like Leclerc, who is now in sixth position.
With his soft tires, Hamilton overtook Sainz on the 63rd lap, then overtook Russel on the 65th lap. But the time difference with Verstappen is still far, more than 10 seconds. In the end, the time gap was not caught up.
Verstappen managed to keep the position, securing his eighth win of the season. While Hamilton finished second and took the fastest lap points, while Russell completed the 2022 Hungarian Grand Prix podium.
