2022 Asian Games Medal Standings: China Dominates, Indonesia Ranks Above Malaysia

KOMPAS.com – The top position in the 2022 Asian Games standings on the closing day certainly belongs to host China. Meanwhile, Indonesia’s ranking is above Malaysia.

The 2022 Asian Games which will be held in Hangzhou, China, from September 23 2023 will close on Sunday (8/10/2023).

China is confirmed to be the overall champion of the 2022 Asian Games. The host contingent’s medal haul can no longer be caught up by other participants.

Until the last day of the 2022 Asian Games, China was at the top of the medal standings with 200 gold, 111 silver and 71 bronze medals.

China’s gold medal haul is almost double that of its closest competitor, Japan.

Japan is in second place in the 2022 Asian Games medal standings with a total of 186 medals consisting of 51 gold, 66 silver and 69 bronze.

The top three positions are completed by South Korea which won 42 gold, 59 silver and 89 bronze medals.

For China, this is the 11th time they have become overall champions of the Asian Games.

The Bamboo Curtain Country’s domination of sporting events in Asian countries began with the 1982 edition in New Delhi, India.

Interestingly, since it was first held in 1951, only two countries have become overall champions of the Asian Games, namely Japan and China.

Japan has always been the overall champion from 1951 to 1978, until finally their dominance was stopped by China, which has appeared strong until now.

Meanwhile, Indonesia is in 13th place in the 2022 Asian Games medal standings with seven gold, 11 silver and 18 bronze.

Indonesia is one point above Malaysia, which collected six gold, eight silver and 18 bronze medals.

Compared to the last edition when they hosted in 2018, the Red and White team’s medal tally has decreased significantly.

At the 2018 Asian Games in Jakarta and Palembang, Indonesia was able to rank fourth with 31 gold, 24 silver and 43 bronze.

However, when looking at Indonesia’s achievements in 2014 (Incheon) and 2010 (Guangzhou), the medal haul in this edition is still better.

Meanwhile, the closing ceremony for the 2022 Asian Games, which was postponed one year due to the Covid-19 pandemic, will be held tonight.

The closing ceremony for the 2022 Asian Games will be held at Hangzhou Sports Park Stadium at 19.00 WIB.
