2021 – How to Upload Music to Spotify and Sync it with Your Phone


To upload music to Spotify, you need a computer.

Spotify has more than 70 million songs in its streaming catalog, but there are many millions of songs that are not on the platform.

If you have songs on your computer that are not streamed on Spotify, you can upload them to Spotify and listen to them there. And when you sync your computer with the Spotify mobile app, you can record these songs on the go.

And of course, if you’re a musician or a recording artist, you can upload your songs to the Spotify catalog for everyone to hear. It just takes a little more work.

Here’s how to upload music from your computer to Spotify and then sync it with the mobile app.

How to Upload Local Music to Spotify on Computer

You have to do this using the Spotify desktop app. which is available free of charge for both Mac and PC.

1. Open Spotify on your computer and click your account name in the upper right corner, then click settings.

Go to your Spotify settings page.

2. Scroll down to the Local files Heading and turning on Show local files.

3. A new menu called Show songs from will appear. If your local songs are in one of the default folders offered by Spotify, turn it on – otherwise click Add source and select the folder on your computer where the songs are located. This will upload any audio file in that folder to Spotify.

4. Restart the Spotify app. After opening it again, click Your library top left.

5. On the page that opens you will find a playlist called Local files. Click on it to open a list of all the songs you’ve uploaded to Spotify.

You can play these songs instantly or move them to other playlists like regular Spotify songs. You just can’t add them to your favorites list.

Now you have uploaded the songs on your computer to the Spotify app on your computer. Let’s bring these songs to your phone as well.

How to Upload Local Music to Spotify on Phone

The steps to listen to your uploaded music on the Spotify mobile app are pretty similar for iPhone and Android users.

Before doing anything, make sure you are a Spotify Premium member. Only premium members can stream local music on the mobile app.

You should also add all of your local music to a playlist that is not the default local files playlist. You cannot open this default playlist in the mobile app. This will make your songs visible.

And finally, if you are using an iPhone, the first thing you need to do is enable local files on your phone. Open Spotify and tap Home in the lower left corner and then the gear icon top right to open the app’s settings. Then tap Local files and turn on the Local audio files Opportunity.

When you have everything set up:

1. Connect your iPhone or Android to the same Wi-Fi network as the computer you uploaded the songs to. If your computer uses Ethernet, temporarily connect it to Wi-Fi.

2. Open the Spotify app and go to the playlist where you drop your local songs.

3. Under the playlist name, tap the download icon. It looks like an arrow pointing down.

Once you tap Download, Spotify will save every song in the playlist on your phone – including those you uploaded. Feel free to move them to other playlists like normal songs.

The songs will stay on your phone until you tap the download icon again to delete them.

Here’s how to upload music to Spotify for others to stream

The steps we have outlined will help you upload music, but only you can listen to them. If you want to add music to the Spotify catalog so that anyone can stream it (and make money from it) there is another process.

To get your music on Spotify, you need to work with a distribution company. Each company has a slightly different process, but usually you have to pay a fee and then let them master your music.

Once you have your songs on Spotify, most distributors take some of the money you make for themselves.

There are dozens of different distribution companies out there helping artists get on Spotify. Most independent artists recommend websites like dystrichid and Tunecore, and Spotify keeps their own list of “preferred” companies.

If you want to upload original music to Spotify, look for a distributor.
