This week’s Hero World Challenge, which kicked off Thursday, marks the last time most of the world’s best golfers will hit the first shot in 2021. Jordan Spieth, Rory McIlroy, Collin Morikawa, Justin Thomas, Brooks Koepka and Bryson DeChambeau headline one of the best small course events of the year, as 20 of the best players in the world – and in the last decade – will play this weekend in an event organized by Tiger Woods at the Albany Golf Course in the Bahamas .
McIlroy went 6-under 66 Thursday to share the lead with Daniel Berger and Abraham Ancer.
Nineteen of the 20 golfers on the course are ranked in the top 50 in the world, and half of them are major championship winners. They will play this week on a very open golf course and with a very good time to round off what has been a truly spectacular year.
Despite what should be a fairly low-key four-day stretch, there are still some interesting stories. McIlroy is trying to win for the second time in his last three starts, DeChambeau is trying to close out what has been perhaps a bit of a disappointing year – he has only one win since his US Open at Winged Foot last September – and Morikawa could reach No. 1. of the world with a victory on Sunday.
If we add it all up, this weekend’s viewing should be impressive, especially considering that this is the last time we will see this collection of players until the Tournament of Champions takes place in early January in Hawaii.
