2020 US election in Florida: where retirees argue

Swing states are the states that decide the choice in the United States. In the past few decades you have voted for the Republican and the Democratic candidate. It is in these states that the decision is made who will become the US President.

That is why there is particularly heated discussion here in the weeks leading up to the election. For example in Florida: there even retirees clash …

Such residential complexes are typical of Florida. With the exception of Maine, the state is home to most of the elderly in the United States: 20.5 percent of the population here are 65 years of age and older * – they are an important group of voters, especially for Trump.

In Florida, Trump won in 2016 with 49.1% * of the vote. Florida’s retirees helped the Republican candidate win the election. With more than 60% they voted for Trump. In Sumter County, where The Villages is located, he even got 68%. But that was before the pandemic.

The question is: does Trump’s handling of Corona change anything in terms of voting behavior? Especially with this highly endangered age group?

We asked Ellen Dugan: She is a pensioner from Berlin who has lived in The Villages for 9 years and is campaigning for Joe Biden there.

Ellen Dugan, resident of “The Villages”:

“In the beginning Republicans didn’t wear masks, but that changed as the cases increased”

We saw the golf cart parade for Trump’s birthday – do the parties often clash?

Ellen Dugan, resident of “The Villages”:

“I was in such a parade once … was called a communist and a baby killer …”

What do you hope for in the remaining weeks of the election campaign – especially in the swing states?

Ellen Dugan, Rentnerin:

“I hope people see that Trump is destroying the country ..”

Even wearing a mask has become a political issue in the USA, almost a kind of cultural war. We spoke to US expert Christian Lammert about the heated fronts:

Florida can decide everything – we can now see why that is so:

A look at the current election polls shows: It will be exciting in Florida. The gap between the two opponents has shrunk in the past few weeks: According to the polling institute Real-Clear-Politics, Joe Biden’s 7.8 percentage point lead has now become just 4 percentage points. 49 percent of Florida voters would vote for Biden; 45 percent for Trump.

On average across all national surveys, Biden is in the lead: 50.8 percent would vote for the Democrats; 41.8 percent the president. *

Biden’s gap is also narrowing in Arizona. There we will next look at another group of voters who can influence the outcome of the election.
