2020, the year of the digital transition for SMEs

The cloud company GoDaddy has prepared a summary of the new measures and business perspectives in the digital area caused by Covid

GoDaddy, a cloud company dedicated to hosting entrepreneurial projects online, has developed a list that includes the main changes and renewed priorities of companies after the arrival of the Covid. The list includes the new measures and trends that the pandemic has sown in the SME and self-employed sector and that will be decisive for its survival in the future. All of them are related to the growing importance of the digital environment and telecommunications.

1. Adoption of teleworking

The accelerated adaptation of thousands of businesses to the routine of teleworking has been one of the most arduous efforts of this 2020. Despite this, most are being able to adapt satisfactorily. According to data extracted from the Global Survey of Entrepreneurs by GoDaddy, 95% have been able to resume their activity before reaching the “new normal”, while 28% did so in phase 0 and opting for teleworking as a solution in 38% of cases.

Among the most popular technological tools to maintain contact with customers, WhatsApp has been the number one option (60%), followed by social networks (46%) and email marketing (31%).

2. A website, so close, yet so far

Having your own sophisticated web space has become essential. 37% of Spanish small companies and freelancers admit that they would have liked to have a to face the new job landscape. However, 78% admit they have no idea what steps to take to get this digital asset up and running, according to data from another GoDaddy report on web opportunities.

3. Ecommerce, the Holy Grail

Parallel to the need for a web space, the importance of adapting the digital channel as a door to sales is raised. Despite the fact that it has been one of the biggest “boom” of this year and that it has meant the survival of many brands, among small Spanish companies and freelancers it is still a terrain to conquer. Specifically, 90% of them do not offer their products or services online and 21% of those who already have a website lack a sales channel.

4. Digital marketing and social networks, a territory to explore

The physical restrictions have forced a rethinking of the strategies to attract new customers. Once again, the digital stage is the perfect ally to weather the situation, with a high reach of the target audience and without the need for contact. However, 89% of those surveyed by GoDaddy do not use SEO strategies, and 95% do not use SEM strategies either. In addition, only 6 out of 100 small companies have contracted online advertising to promote themselves, and a third do not carry out digital strategies. In short, digital marketing and social networks are still a pending issue among small Spanish businesses.

5. Protecting the security of websites, an issue in development

92% of those surveyed by GoDaddy said they do not currently use the certification SSL (Secure Socket Layer) for your website. This deficiency leaves websites unprotected when it comes to data transfers. Further, This certificate positions the site as safe in search engines, which reinforces the trust of users.

“2020 has been a year of great changes and it is clear that nothing will ever be the same. The tools necessary to carry out a small business today have little to do with those used until before the pandemic, COVID-19 has changed everything, presenting technology and its advantages as the best allies to face the closures of face-to-face business and reach potential customers, ”sums up Gianluca Stamerra, GoDaddy’s regional director for Spain, Italy and France.
