2020 New York auto show permanently canceled

Although there was a hint of hope that the postponed edition of New York Auto Show 2020 can actually take place at the end of August, it is clear that the pandemic has decided otherwise. The event which led us to believe that automobile life would eventually resume its normal course has just been definitively canceled, due to the pandemic of COVID-19 which transformed the vocation of the Jacob K. Javits Convention Center.

As New York City has been – and still is – particularly affected by the COVID-19 pandemic, the convention center where the New York Auto Show is usually located has been transformed into field hospital to welcome the sick. Although no patient is currently hospitalized there, the makeshift hospital must remain functional in case the need arises.

This is a second setback for the New York Auto Show, which was moved for the first time about two months ago. In fact, given the urgency of the pandemic situation of last March, the initial programming for April had been moved to August in order to allow time for the outbreak to stabilize.

The cancellation of the 2020 edition of the New York Auto Show poses an additional challenge for automakers, who must compete in imagination to introduce their new vehicles to consumers. As we have seen in recent weeks, several manufacturers have had to review their communication strategy and are now resorting to online press launch.

Attempting to reiterate the importance of such an event, the organization of the New York Auto Show argues that an event like this is of utmost importance to consumers. In 2019, according to Salon statistics, “In 2019, 72% of New York Auto Show attendees said they would buy or lease a new vehicle in the next 12 months, and 36% of they added brands to their lists of consideration after visiting the Show. “

According to current forecasts, the New York Auto Show will resume service for the 2021 edition, which will be held from April 2 to 11, 2021.
