Archaeologists already started in January this year to explore even larger undiscovered areas in the old ruined city, according to CBS.
Now the popular tourist destination is attracting attention again, after a nearly 2,000-year-old pizza painting was found.

Heated debate
Pizza’s place of origin is constantly the subject of heated debate. Nevertheless, many claim that the original pizza originates from the region of Campania, where the capital Naples is highlighted as the birthplace of pizza.

Recent findings will then be able to support exactly this claim.
At least almost. The supposed “pizza” depicted in the painting lacks both cheese and tomato – which should be decisive for it to be considered a pizza in practical terms.

Director of Pompeii, Gabriel Zuchtriegel, is however convinced that the painting will evoke associations with most people.
– In this context, how can we avoid thinking about pizza, which is actually considered a rather poor dish here in southern Italy, he says, and adds:
– A dish that has taken the world by storm and is served in great restaurants.

Curious findings
The drawings on the painting are believed to refer to the “hospitable gifts” offered to guests according to ancient Greek tradition. A tradition that can be dated to 300 BC.
In addition, the recent excavations are said to have revealed several curious finds which, in the same way as the painting, can be dated back many years.
For example, a bakery attached to an obsolete house should be among the finds.
– In the work areas near the furnace, three skeletons have been found in recent weeks, said an expert at Pompeii.
These were allegedly killed during a volcanic eruption in AD 79.
