Thousands of Ukrainian soldiers were surrounded in two neighboring cities in the People’s Republic of Luhansk.
“Four Ukrainian battalions as well as an artillery unit were among those trapped,” the Russian Defense Ministry said in a statement.

The besieged force also includes about 120 fighters from Ukraine’s notorious “Right Sector”, a neo-Nazi group of up to 80 foreign fighters, according to Russia’s defense ministry.
The troops have been besieged in the towns of Gorskoye and Zolotoye, which lie south of the major cities of Severodonetsk and Lisichansk.

The two cities have recently become one of the main targets for both sides amid continued fighting over territory of the Donetsk and Luhansk People’s Republics.
The Russian military also claims trapped units have lost more than 60% of their strength.
