Complying with the announcement made this week by the President of the Republic, Sebastián Piñera, this afternoon 204,000 doses of the AstraZeneca vaccine arrived in the country, a formula that will be used as a booster dose in the new stage of the inoculation process against covid-19 .

The Minister of Social Development and Family, Karla Rubilar, attended the Santiago airport to receive the shipment. they were initially vaccinated. Our goal is that the elderly are better protected in the event that the Delta variant increases or other variants appear, which may compromise the health of the population ”.

Reinforcement process with AstraZeneca that will begin on Wednesday, August 11 and that in a first stage will focus on people over 55 years of age who have completed their vaccination schedule with Sinovac. While for immunocompromised people from the age of 16 and who have received their second vaccination until May 31, the Pfizer vaccine will be administered.

The AstraZeneca vaccine has the support of the World Health Organization, the European Medicines Agency and the Institute of Public Health, an entity that after reviewing the recommendations of these international organizations decided that the vaccine be applied in men over 45 years of age and women over 55 years of age. To date, the vaccine has been approved for use in 135 countries, so more than 102 million vaccines have already been distributed, being the most widely used inoculation in the world, followed by Pfizer. As an example, in the United Kingdom there are more than 30 million inhabitants inoculated with AstraZeneca, in Germany 12.5 million doses have been applied, followed by Italy with 11.8 million doses and Spain with 9.2 million doses. While in our country the number of people inoculated with AstraZeneca reached 466,255 people, a number that will increase.

After receiving this important shipment of vaccines, Minister Rubilar took the opportunity to “make a call to all older people to review their vaccination card. They have to fixate on two things: first that the doses of their vaccination scheme is SINOVAC or, failing that, CORONAVAC and that they have also completed the process before March 14 to be able to access their booster doses ”.

For his part, the national director of SENAMA, Octavio Vergara, referred to the importance that these doses will have “in reinforcing the care of the elderly, since more than 20 thousand residents of ELEAM Long Stay Establishments will receive their booster dose in these weeks. They are the ones who have given us an example of responsibility by following sanitary measures and it is our duty to continue taking care of them ”.

In Chile to date, 25,341,147 doses of vaccines have been administered to combat COVID 19. Of these, 13,355,851 correspond to people with one dose and 12,493,881 who completed their vaccination schedule, in a process that is voluntary and gratuitous. On Thursday, July 29, the country fulfilled the purpose of reaching 80% of the target population with a complete vaccination schedule.
