200 pages leave for Tashkent, we want Iliyan Todorov with them, to go to prison for life (Obzor)

The chief prosecutor showed the request for extradition of the father of the hockey player Kiril Vazharov – Mikhail, and of the sister of Vasil Alexandrov – Miroslava

200 pages of documents will be translated in the next two days to be sent by the end of the week to the Uzbek capital, Tashkent. With them, the Bulgarian prosecutor’s office asks the local authorities to hand over 37-year-old Iliyan Todorov. He was sentenced to life imprisonment in our country for the double murder in front of the Solo discotheque on April 18, 2009. Then the 21-year-old goalkeeper of the national hockey team, Kiril Vazharov, and his friend, 24-year-old Vasil Alexandrov, were fatally stabbed. Another friend of theirs, Kiril Dimitrov, was also wounded.

On Tuesday, the chief prosecutor Ivan Geshev met with Kiril’s father – Mihail Vazharov and Vasil’s sister – Miroslava Alexandrova. Half an hour before 2:30 p.m., when the two entered Geshev’s office on the fourth floor of the Courthouse, the request for Todorov’s extradition had been signed. The chief prosecutor showed it to the relatives. He assured them that within two or three days it should be translated to go to Tashkent. The materials are voluminous, because the entire judgment of the Supreme Court is also translated.

“Assure us that they are doing everything possible in the fastest way to bring him to Bulgaria”,

said Mikhail Vazharov. He added that they were most interested in what the period of preparation of the documents would be. According to Bulgarian laws, 60 days is the time limit in which we respond to extradition requests. What he is like in Uzbekistan, however, is not clear. The video conference between our Prosecutor General and his counterpart from Uzbekistan has not yet taken place.

“I learned about the detention of Iliyan Todorov from the media,” admitted Kiril Vazharov’s father. “I said it’s not right for us to learn this way, and the Attorney General very sincerely apologized to us that a mistake was made by their international department,” he added.

Violeta Alexandrova, the mother of Vasil Alexandrov, who celebrated his birthday on the evening of April 18, 2009, first learned from Kiril’s mother.

I really hope the culprit is brought back and gets what he deserves, she told BBC.

“The punishment from now on is fair, if he enters Bulgaria, he goes directly to prison,” Vazharov added.

Iliyan Todorov’s life sentence has been in effect since December 2013. At that time, however, he was no longer in Bulgaria. It is not clear when he left the country because, after former judge Rumyana Chenalova acquitted him of the double murder at first instance on December 9, 2011, Todorov was released from custody. There was no ban on leaving Bulgaria. When, in December 2013, police and court security searched for him at his grandparents’ home in Plovdiv, where he was last registered, he was not found there. Ilian is from Pernik.

When he ended up in Uzbekistan and why he chose that country is not clear, because we have a legal aid agreement with them since 2004. Fugitives usually prefer destinations from which extradition is almost impossible, such as Dubai and South Africa.

Iliyan Todorov was arrested at the airport in Uzbekistan while trying to fly to Istanbul on March 1. When the documents were checked, it became clear that he was traveling with a fake passport. Therefore, a case was opened in Uzbekistan for the fake passport. According to Kiril Vazharov’s father

recognition lasted 3-4 days

The Bulgarian authorities were officially notified on March 4.

At the meeting between the chief prosecutor and the relatives of the two murdered youths, it was not commented whether Todor would not have to wait for his sentence to be served in Tashkent first, if he is sentenced there.

I have not lost hope, admitted Mikhail Vazharov. He added that he would not like to see Iliyan.

Vasil Alexandrov’s mother, Violeta, said that over the years, our services have been interested in whether the search continues. For more than 10 years there was no information about him. Everything is now in the hands of the Bulgarian prosecutor’s office, Vazharov concluded.
