Nearly 200 ethnic Bulgarians from the Ukrainian city of Berdyansk, Zaporizhia Oblast, are looking for a way to Bulgaria. At the moment the city is occupied by the Russian army and according to our compatriots there is no way to leave the settlement, NOVA reports.
Life in occupation. This is how 18-year-old Vera has lived for the last 10 days.
“I came to Ukraine on February 11 to get a passport, but I couldn’t go to Bulgaria and the war started,” said Vera Jeleva.
He is studying sociology. He is a first year student at Sofia University. He is still not lecturing today because he cannot escape from his hometown.
“Everything is quiet now, I did not hear the bombing today, yesterday it was also quiet, only we are occupied by the Russians. We don’t have the opportunity to leave the city, if a person wants to go out, they just shoot his car, if it’s not an official corridor, and that’s why we are kind of hostages, ”she explains. “Every day there is an alarm from 19:00 to 06:00 in the morning. “It’s absurd and scary, we don’t want a war, the Russians don’t want a war either,” Vera said.
Now she is with her family. There are eight children, and the youngest is 5 years old. All ethnic Bulgarians.
“I don’t go out at all, only our parents, only to the store and my father goes to work, he answers so that the people in the houses have electricity,” says Vera.
There is electricity and water in the city, but the food in the shops is running out.
“We only have stocks of food, the situation in the store is already more difficult, people buy everything quickly and the food in the store runs out,” says Vera.
There are about 200 more ethnic Bulgarians in the Zaporozhye region.
“We need a green corridor, from Berdyansk, Zaporozhye region. I know that now there are corridors, but not in our area, but in Odessa. “Everything is fine in Odessa now and people can travel on their own, and we are hostages and we do not have access to leave the city,” said Vera.
They hope to be evacuated soon.
“It’s scary, it’s really scary, but I really believe that we will come to Bulgaria,” she said.
The Ministry of Foreign Affairs informed us that they have contacted those blocked in the city of Berdyansk and will assist them when a green corridor is built there.
