The truth was reached after an accidental DNA test

A human error led to the exchange of two babies in a maternity ward almost 20 years ago, after one of the girls at a later age accidentally discovered through a DNA test that she was not the daughter of her alleged parents, the Associated Press reported.

“It was a human error and we could not determine who was to blame,” Sara Alba, Rioja’s health chief, told a news conference.

“The systems were different then and not as computerized as they are now,” she said, assuring that this could not happen again.

The newborns were exchanged in 2002 after being born five hours apart at a hospital in Rioja. Both babies were in an incubator.

The woman who first discovered she had been given to the wrong parents is now 19 years old and is seeking 3m euros in compensation from local health authorities.

Alba made the statement after the local newspaper Rioja announced the exchange today. According to the publication, the other woman, who was given to the wrong parents as a baby, was informed about the mistake.
