The San Fernando Oral Criminal Court issued the guilty verdict for José Segundo Vargas, 58, who, according to the verdict, attempted to murder his ex-partner in front of their two children on May 14, 2023. The victim was represented by the National Service for Women and Gender Equality (SernamEG) of the O’Higgins Region.
Attempted femicide, contempt of court, illegal possession of a weapon, simple threats and drunk driving were the charges that led to the sentence given to the man who, more than a year ago, despite being prohibited from approaching his ex-partner and children, violated the injunction by committing the crime in the commune of Chimbarongo.
The judicial process lasted one year and three months, and the plaintiffs were the National Service for Women and Gender Equality of the O’Higgins Region – through the Service’s Extreme Violence lawyer, Patricio Reyes – and the Public Prosecutor’s Office.
The regional director of SernamEG O’Higgins, María Jesús Avello Rifo, highlighted the result of this process and explained that “we have followed this case very closely, which has also had a special public dimension. As SernamEG O’Higgins, we are undoubtedly satisfied with the result of this trial, which we took part in from the very beginning, by virtue of the powers we have as a Service, sponsoring the victim throughout this judicial process.”
At the same time, Avello Rifo indicated that “we hope that these types of sentences will be exemplary. As a Service, we will use all the tools at our disposal to work harder towards a clear objective: that women in our country and region live a life free of violence. To do this, we also need the participation and commitment of the community and all the relevant institutions, so that together we can advance towards the eradication of gender violence.”
It should be noted that the victim had already filed legal actions against the aggressor in June 2021, when she had the representation and support of the San Fernando Women’s Center – a space belonging to the SernamEG Violence area – which resulted in sentences for domestic violence and a ban on approaching her and her children in November 2022. However, after failing to comply with the ruling of the Courts, on May 14, 2023, José Segundo Vargas committed the crime of attempted femicide, facing the judicial process in preventive detention.
