In the summer of 2004, the DFB was once again in a hangover mood. The selection coached by Rudi Völler had been eliminated from the European Championships after the preliminary round for the second time in a row. And again without a win. After a 1:1 draw against the Netherlands, a 0:0 draw against Latvia and a 1:2 draw against the Czech Republic, the tournament was over – and so was the time of team manager Völler. The then 44-year-old announced his retirement after four years.
He was followed by Jürgen Klinsmann, four years younger than him, who, together with assistant coach Joachim Löw and manager Oliver Bierhoff, was tasked with making the necessary changes at the DFB and preparing Germany for the 2006 World Cup at home. First of all, the captain of the 1996 European Championships, who was still an unknown quantity as a coach, had to start his time as national coach – in Vienna.
