“In addition, there are a lot of people who don’t know that you can still trade in old money. We still accept anything above 50 Belgian francs. So only tickets. There is no time limit, an end date has never been set by FPS Finance. You can therefore still exchange them, not at your own commercial bank, but at the counters of the National Bank in Brussels. And that costs nothing. Whoever brings in 100 francs will receive 2.5 euros instead.”
What also plays a role is a look at the past. “A lot of people have to nostalgic reasons bills in their cupboard or drawer or collection folder. You can also see that in the large numbers of 100 or 200 Belgian francs that were left behind. In addition, there are notes, especially the oldest issues, which today are worth more than their face value. For collectors, the amounts are higher than if you exchange them with us. So they stay behind.”
