The victims of the terrorist attacks 20 years ago are remembered at the former location of the World Trade Center in New York.
US President Biden, his predecessors Obama and Clinton as well as numerous relatives of victims and helpers from back then gathered at the memorial at so-called Ground Zero. There the names of all the victims are read out in a ceremony lasting several hours. Before that, a minute’s silence was observed at the time on September 11, 2001, when the first airplane was directed into the north tower of the World Trade Center. Later another flew into the south tower. Both towers collapsed.
Biden also wants to attend memorial services at the other attack sites, the Pentagon and a field near Shanksville, Pennsylvania, where the other planes crashed. Around 3,000 people were killed in the terrorist attacks.
This message was broadcast on September 11th, 2021 on Deutschlandfunk.
