As data from the Institute of Public Health indicates, it is exceptional for a person to die so young from the coronavirus. Previously, a 3-year-old girl, a 12-year-old girl and an 18-year-old woman also lost their lives after being infected with the coronavirus.

In Belgium, new coronavirus contaminations are slowing down and decreasing slightly, according to the latest data released by the public health institute Sciensano. The number of deaths and hospitalizations is increasing. The trend observed for several days is confirmed.
Between August 7 and August 13, there was an average of 574 new infections per day, a drop of 5% from the previous week. “After a period of sustained rise since the beginning of July, this is the first time that we can announce a drop in weekly averages”, Interfederal spokesperson Frédérique Jacobs said at the press conference of the Crisis Center and the SPF Public Health on Monday. “Nationally, that might mean that the peak is last us”. In total, 78,223 contaminations were recorded. The situation is developing favorably in most of the provinces, including Antwerp where the decline continues. On the other hand, it is the reverse in Brussels where the positivity rate reached 6.7% last week. “If these developments continue, in two days Brussels will have a higher weekly total than Antwerp”, warns Frederique Jacobs. There are also increases in the provinces of Walloon Brabant, Flemish Brabant and Luxembourg, but these are limited, reassures the spokesperson.
Between August 10 and August 16, the average of new hospitalizations was 35 per day, a 29% increase from the previous seven-day period. “This increase is in line with what we expected and should continue for some time., she said, adding that the situation in hospitals is currently under control. More than half of the new admissions are in Antwerp and Brussels. During the period from August 7 to 13, 8.3 people died from the virus on average, 115% more than the previous week. “Now that the heat wave has passed, we will be able to see over the course of the week whether the deaths were linked to a temporary spike associated with high temperatures and ozone concentrations or with the infection by Covid-19”, explains the interfederal spokesperson. In total, 9,939 people have died from the coronavirus in Belgium.
